This brings us to the last few
decades. In Italy this period saw the emergence of birds
of large dimensions, the appearance of shoulders and
jabots (frills on the breast) of previously-unknown
fineness, and, above all, of a curling of the head
plumage that was entirely new and unexpected. All these
changes inevitably made Italian breeders realise that an
authentically-new breed had by now established itself on
the world scene. Official
recognition of the new breed came during the World
Championships in Portugal in January 2001.
