The Italian Giant Frill is the
triumphant result of centuries of domestication of a
small, modestly-coloured bird: the wild canary (serinus
canarius). The degree of fine breeding achieved
through committed selection by successive generations of
breeders is such that I believe that these small
creatures have now reached their maximum evolutionary
development. Suffice it to say that while the small
progenitor was just 12 cm long, the Italian Giant Frill
is 22 cm long, not to mention the other traits. A long
process of selection, then, which genetic laws have
allowed us to interpret to the full. But how? These brief
introductory notes are intended to make it easier to
understand how this magnificent breed has emerged.
